Employee Health and Wellbeing Manager
What are you/your organisation currently focussing on in terms of workplace health and wellbeing?
Our employee wellbeing program Smile provides a holistic wellbeing offering. The focus areas, mental health and nutrition, have been determined by employee insights which were gathered using diagnostics, including biometric checks and self-reported wellbeing assessments.
What aspect of workplace health and wellbeing does your organisation do well in?
As a health and care company, we do well in understanding that employee wellbeing is important, we have to care for our people so they can care for others, and it’s aligned to our organisation purpose, to help people live longer, healthier happier lives.
What’s your biggest challenge working in workplace health and wellbeing?
The biggest challenge is engagement, with around 400 sites, different businesses, and communication channels. It really helps to have wellbeing champions to act as local advocates and where champions are in place, engagement is stronger. I also consider the varying workplace settings, and adapt the way in which programs are communicated and delivered.
How does WayAhead Workplaces add value to your organisations health and wellbeing program?
WayAhead Workplaces is a very good forum for me to hear the latest research, industry insights and case studies. Everyone is there to help improve workplace wellbeing which makes for interesting conversations and networking opportunities.
How do you deal with stress?
I’m more aware of when stress is building and often it’s because there too much going on! I reprioritise and keep up with the small things that help boost me, having a break at lunchtime when at work, even just to walk around the block.
What is a key consideration for people in workplace health and wellbeing roles?
For people working in health and wellbeing roles, self-care is important so save some energy for your own wellbeing! This helps keep me aligned to my values and it feels authentic when I talk about wellbeing opportunities if I am giving things a go in my own life.
How do you switch off from work?
I love walking and started growing vegetables last year, and this keeps me connected with the great outdoors.
What is your best time saving tip?
I find setting three priorities each day helps keep me focused on my must-do’s when the emails flood in. I am a list writer so enjoy ticking these off when complete too!
What do you think the future of work health and wellness programs look like?
There is opportunity for wellbeing to be integrated into every aspect of the employee life cycle rather than as a stand-alone wellbeing program. For example, mental health training built into leader’s job role training. I’m also a fan of positive psychology practices, such as gratitude, kindness and mindfulness all of which may instil positive emotions and I feel workplaces are an ideal environment to nurture these practices.
